Among a long list of other products, hand sanitizer has become a scarcity during the global pandemic. With most people applying it whenever they walk into a business or leave they’re home, its no wonder why its been difficult to find. While alcohol-based sanitizers don’t replace soap, they make a decent replacement when soap is not available.

However, the Food and Drug Administration announced recently that they have seen a sharp increase in sanitizer products that contain methanol. Methanol is a dangerous neurotoxin that could possibly kill nerve cells in the body. If enough methanol is absorbed through your skin, it will then circulate and potentially affect the nerve cells in your brain.

Common symptoms of methanol toxicity are headaches, vomiting, and even blurred vision or blindness if the toxicity increases. Methanol has been know to lead to hospitalizations and even death among children and adults who have consumed the liquid. Ao far, the FDA says 14 sanitizers have tested positive for the chemical.
