Evidence has led to the conclusion that another recalled Takata airbag has caused the 17th death in the U.S, increasing the global death toll to 26. The victim was driving a 2002 Honda Civic, according to a statement released by Honda this past Saturday. This statement comes after an investigation was done by Honda and U.S Traffic Safety concluded. According to the report, the inflator on the drivers and passenger side of the vehicle ruptured suddenly.
It is not uncommon to hear about Takata airbags suddenly rupturing. Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate in their airbags to cause them to inflate. The issue with this is that this chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to moisture in the air. Unfortunately, this can cause an explosion where the metal canister containing the chemical can erupt, causing shrapnel to be projected towards passengers.
