Water at Camp Lejeune Linked to Cancer

In 1982, the U.S. Marine Corps discovered the drinking water at the Camp Lejeune Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was contaminated by various Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

The harmful chemicals found at Camp Lejeune include:

  • Benzene
  • Tetrachloroethylene/Perchloroethylene (PCE)
  • Trichloroethylene (TCE)
  • Vinyl Chloride (VC)
  • Elemental Mercury

The contamination is believed to stem from underground storage leaks, industrial spills, and improper waste disposal practices. The exposure began in 1957 and continued to endanger servicemembers, families, and employees at Camp Lejeune until 1987. This was reportedly after the government learned of the dangers and removed the most dangerous wells by 1985.
