So far, four people have died and thirty others have been hospitalized due to a listeria outbreak. This outbreak has been linked to a recalled product from Sun Hong Foods. Their enoki mushrooms were recalled on Monday according to the FDA website. So far, Californa, Hawaii, and New Jersey all have reports of people dying from this product. 17 other states have 36 reports of people being infected. 30 of those have involved hospitalization. Six of these cases involved pregnant women. Unfortunately, two of those women have miscarried.
The CDC has advised consumers to not eat, serve, or sell any of the enoki mushrooms distributed by Sun Hong Foods. Symptoms of listeria can vary from person to person. However, most people experience headaches, confusion, loss of balance, stiff neck, muscle aches, fever, and convulsions. Pregnant women may suffer many of the same symptoms, but the infection can also lead to miscarriages, life-threating infections for the baby, and much more. These symptoms typically start one to four weeks after eating the contaminated food. Luckily, the infection can be treated with antibiotics.
So far, it is unclear as to where the contamination started, or whether any other products were affected. These mushrooms are labeled as a “Product of Korea,” and are white and long with small caps. The affected mushrooms were sold in 7.05 oz clear plastic packages with green labels. The illnesses from this product began between November 23, 2016, all the way up to December 13, 2019. It’s very possible more people have been affected by this outbreak. If you have experienced any symptoms of listeria, be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
