Police reported that a driver who may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs hit four pedestrians as they crossed a street recently. Two of the pedestrians were killed and the other two, a woman and the infant she was carrying, are critically injured.

Seattle Police Deputy Chief Nick Metz said, “This is obviously a very tragic situation. It’s not very normal that we have this level of folks who are victimized in this way.”

Keff Kappel, a Seattle police spokesman, said that the driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old Seattle man, was in custody and under investigation for possibly driving under the influence.

One adult male and one adult female were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Kappel.

A Seattle Fire Department spokesman, Kyle Moore, said that the injured two were a 25-year-old female and a 2-week-old infant.

Moore reported, “When we arrived on scene, the infant was not breathing, so we initiated CPR and got the heartbeat back.”

The adult female suffered a serious head injury. Moore said that both the woman and the infant were in critical condition with “life-threatening injuries.” They were both taken to Harborview Medical Center and it is unknown if the woman was the mother of the infant.

Kappel said, “It’s quite a workup that they do, they’ll be out here for a couple hours.”

Metz said that police would be more obviously present in the area in the future; the accident happened right across the street from a middle school.

This accident was particularly upsetting for first responders, said Moore.“It hits both police and fire…they have kids, it hits them hard.”
